USSNC Living History Crew

WELCOME

Welcome to the website of the USSNC LIVING HISTORY CREW. We are an all-volunteer group of living historians with an interest in honoring and perpetuating the memory of the World War II battleship Navy. We do this by replicating the look, work, and lifestyle of the sailors who manned these huge floating cities that were the most powerful ships of their era. We come from all walks of life and hail from up and down the entire eastern seaboard of the United States. We are military service veterans and non-veterans. Some are living historians and re-enactors of other ages, some not. We share a unique bond because we have chosen to portray members of the naval service in the greatest war of the Twentieth Century. We have salt in our nostrils and a love of history in our souls.

OUR MISSION

The LHC of the USSNC exists to support four goals:

  • To further the mission of the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA of educating the public about the ship and its crew by sponsoring living history events onboard the ship.
  • To assist in the preservation and restoration of the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA by providing volunteer efforts to the ship’s restoration projects.
  • To educate the public about the U.S. Navy in WWII by participating in living history events and displays with other organizations and historic naval vessels.
  • To provide a fun and entertaining forum for unit members to learn about the U.S. Navy in WWII and provide the opportunity for fellowship with those of like interests.

The Living History Crew achieves its goals by providing periodic living history programs and by serving as volunteers for restoration and preservation projects. Living history events are conducted at least semi-annually and feature uniformed living historians who educate visitors to the ship on the varied aspects of the life and work of the World War II battleship sailor. This is accomplished through both static displays and programmed subject-specific scenarios.

ORGANIZATION

The LHC is governed by a five member Board of Directors. The Board members are elected for a two-year term. Only Detachment members in good standing are eligible for election to the Board of Directors.

The Board shall determine all policy for the Detachment and shall be the final authority for all decisions regarding the Detachment. The Board shall elect from among its own members a Chairman, a Vice Chairman, and a Secretary/Treasurer.

Currently, we are organized into three Departments and ten Divisions. However, if someone wants to organize an additional Division, he can submit his proposal to the Board for approval.

HOW CAN I JOIN?

Membership in the LHC is open to anyone regardless of sex, race, color, or creed who is at least sixteen years of age and who has an interest in helping to achieve the stated goals of the organization. However, because we are recreating the Navy of WWII, members accepted as part of the ship’s crew must be male. Female members will be assigned to the shore based WAVES Unit. Previous re-enacting or living history experience or prior naval service is not required. Applicants must agree to purchase the minimum required uniform items and adhere to the rules and regulations of the LHC.

If you think you can handle this assignment, contact us at livinghistory@battleshipnc.com
