SUBMARINE NORTH CAROLINA (updated: 31 May 07)

The next Navy combatant named for the State of North Carolina, USS NORTH CAROLINA (SSN 777), will enter service in early 2008. The Battleship and her World War II crew are honored to be able to transfer the NORTH CAROLINA legacy to the 21st Century submarine crew.

The submarine was christened on April 21, 2007. At the shipyard ceremony, the submarine's sponsor, Mrs. Linda Bowman, broke the traditional bottle of sparkling wine on the submarine's hull. For photos of the event, click here. To view the webcast of the ceremony, click here.

The current schedule of significant milestones for the Submarine NORTH CAROLINA call for:

  • sea trials in November, 2007
  • delivery to the Navy in December 2007
  • commissioning in early 2008.

OVERNIGHT EDUCATION PROGRAM CANCELLED

In response to numerous requests from scouts across the State, one part of the ongoing restoration program was to refurbish a large section of berthing spaces and make other infrastructure improvements to permit starting an overnight education program similar to that which other memorialized ships across the United States offer. Unfortunately, the requirements mandated by the North Carolina Department of Insurance were so extensive and cost prohibitive that the Battleship Commission was, most reluctantly, forced to make the decision to cancel the improvements.
