Battleship North Carolina - Ongoing Projects

The Battleship has embarked on a series of restoration projects designed to maintain this National Historic Landmark well into the 21st Century. Because of the scope of work involved for a few of the restoration projects, a statewide fundraising campaign was undertaken in 1998. Operation Shipshape, as the campaign was called, was extremely successful. Just over $6.7 million was raised through a combination of state, corporation and foundation, and individual contributions including scouts and school children.

The success of the campaign allowed the Battleship Commission to embark upon three near-term restoration projects:

	Operation Shipshape
	Teak Deck Restoration
	Wardroom and Main Deck
	Drydock/Hull Restoration
	Restoration Photos

	Replacement of the original teak decking.
	Restoration of the Battleship's Wardroom and other main deck spaces. In addition to providing much needed additional environmentally controlled exhibit space, most of the Main Deck spaces would also be ADA compliant.

It also permitted longer-term planning for other projects including a drydocking of the Battleship to have her underwater hull preserved which may occur no earlier than 2012.

The good news for visitors is that the Battleship will remain open while the first two restoration projects are undertaken.
