The
Ship's Layout section provides descriptive information on the layout
of the Battleship's spaces and her primary armament - her gun systems.
The accompanying cutaway rendering by well-respected maritime artist,
Tom Freeman, gives you a sample of the complexity of the space arrangement
of the Battleship and a sense of location within the hull of the
ship of selected significant elements.
For simplicity, the ship's layout is separated into three areas: the Main Deck, the lower decks and the upper decks. The Main Deck is the uppermost deck running the full length of the ship and is the deck that separates the upper decks from the lower decks. The lower decks are those below the Main Deck. To keep your naval terminology straight, those decks running the full length of the ship are called "decks" and those that do not are called "platforms." On NORTH CAROLINA, there are five decks below the Main Deck. They are, in descending order: Second Deck, Third Deck, First Platform, Second Platform, and the Hold. The upper decks, or superstructure decks, are those above the Main Deck. Again, to keep your naval terminology straight, those partial decks above the Main Deck are called "levels." On NORTH CAROLINA there are 10 levels above the Main Deck and they are, in ascending order: 01 Level through 0-10 Level. |
