The
Combat Information Center (CIC) gathered, evaluated, and distributed
information from radar, radio and visual sources. CIC provided the
Captain and Gunnery Officer information needed for decisions regarding
the Ship's maneuvers and defense.
If an
admiral were embarked as the Task Group Commander, one of his staff
would also be in CIC to make recommendations to the admiral concerning
the entire task group, not just this Battleship.
On the
left side of the room is the surface search radar console. The operator
determined range and bearing information on friendly and enemy ships
detected by that radar. He passed position data to men plotting
the Ships' movements on one of the plotting tables in the middle
of the room.

In the
far left corner is the air search radar console. The operator passed
aircraft position information to men standing behind the large circular
glass plotting board on the right side of the room. Those men plotted
the location of both enemy and friendly aircraft on the big board.
In this way the Ship's fighter direction officer could follow the
action and direct task group fighter planes assigned to defend the
force against enemy aircraft.
