"Join the Navy and
see the World", a former advertising slogan, is a most appropriate
opening for this section. For many of the crew of the Battleship
NORTH CAROLINA, their naval service was the first time away from
home and, for many of them, joining the Navy was a means to leave
the Depression behind. Particularly when the liberty port was in
a big city such as New York or a more exotic port such as Pearl
Harbor, the opportunity to experience a far different lifestyle
than that in which they had grown up was exhilarating.
