Local author, Cindy Horrell Ramsey will be signing her new book Boys of the Battleship North Carolina in the Ship’s Store on Saturday, May 3rd from 3:00-5:00pm In this book, Ms. Ramsey writes a moving narrative of the North Carolina through the eyes of the men who served aboard her.  After visiting the National Archives and participating in crew interviews during a crew reunion, she was inspired to tell the story of these boys and their Ship during World War II. She then spent years researching the Ship's archives and talking to former crewmembers resulting in a compelling and emotional story. 

 
Someone Paved the Way

Roosevelt Flenard will be signing his memoirs, Someone Paved the Way,  Thursday, May 1st, from 2:00 to 4:00pmRoosevelt Flenard was a Mess Attendant (mess boy) for six years in the US Navy during WWII.  He served on six ships including the USS NORTH CAROLINA Battleship.  Author Sylvia Johnson-Cooper, Ph.D.tells his story from his journals and memories.  Flenard depicts what it was like for black sailors where the racial policy was "if you were black, you were second rate and your purpose was to serve." Meet this inspiring veteran.
