Donating to the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA Collections

The Battleship collects artifacts and archival materials directly related to the construction or service of the USS NORTH CAROLINA (BB-55) from 1936-1947 her status in the Reserve Fleet (1947-1961) and as a Memorial and museum in Wilmington, NC. Items related to the officers and crew or the shipyard workers who constructed the Battleship are collected as well as items representative of installed equipment, gear, uniforms, life onboard, documents or combat common to a battleship of the 1941-1947 period.

This criterion applies to all the ships named NORTH CAROLINA modified to their dates of service:

  • Ship-of-the-Line NORTH CAROLINA, 1824-1867
  • Confederate Ironclad NORTH CAROLINA, 1863-1864
  • Armored Cruiser NORTH CAROLINA (ACR-12), 1908-1921
  • Battleship NORTH CAROLINA (BB-52), 1919-1922
  • Battleship NORTH CAROLINA (BB-55), 1941-1947
  • Nuclear Attack Submarine NORTH CAROLINA (SSN 777), 2008 -

Objects and archival materials, including photographs, are primarily added to the collection through donation. If you have something you would like to donate, please contact the Museum Department and we would be glad to consider it. Please send us a description of the item, as much background information as you can provide, and a photograph of the item if possible.

Not all offered items are accepted due to space, preservation requirements or other factors. If we cannot accommodate your donation, we will recommend other potential museums for your consideration. All donations are provided safe, secure and long-term preservation.

Donors may elect to claim the value of their donations as tax-deductible contributions within limits as established by Internal Revenue Service codes. Donors are responsible for establishing the value of their own donations. The Battleship, as a matter of policy, does not provide appraisals for donated items.

The Battleship assumes that donations are offered in good faith and that donors have full legal authority as individual owners, or as owners' designated agents, to not only transfer custody and ownership of donated items, but also all copyright and literary rights associated with the property to the Battleship. The Battleship makes no commitment concerning the display of donated items, or their perpetual retention, and reserves the right to dispose of items, which, in its judgment, are inappropriate for retention in its collections.
