Lesson 9 - Old Battleship Never Die


Subject: Language Arts - Grade Level: 5


Objective

Student will write an informational report or narrative about the four units of the Iowa class battleships that were recommissioned for active service today. Students will conduct research through reading and gathering information on these battleships and how they have been modified to play a major role in modern naval operations.

(Optional) *Note: Students could also write a comparison/contrast narrative describing in detail how these modern day recommissioned battleships compare and differ from World War II battleships like the USS North Carolina. Students could also discuss and write about how some of these recommissioned battleships were used in the Korean and Vietnam Wars describing what their exact roles were.

Activities/Procedures

Students will research and access information about today’s Iowa class battleships and how the Navy is currently using them. After research is conducted, students will write an informational report to present to the class.

Teacher assessment and evaluation of informational report/narrative.
