Lesson 11 - Bring Back the Battleships


Subject: Language Arts - Grade Level: 5-11


Objective

Students will write a letter to the Secretary of the Navy persuading him and congress to recommission some of the Old World War II Battleships. Students after researching the subject, will present rationales supporting their position to utilize World War II Battleships.

Materials

  • Internet
  • Books on Naval ships: Battleship

Activities/Procedures

Students research how the Iowa class battleships are currently being used by the Navy. They can also research how they were used in the Korean and Vietnam Wars as part of their argument to bring them back into active service today. After research has been conducted, students will write a persuasive letter that expresses an opinion and convinces others to agree with that opinion. Persuasive letter must include introduction, boy, and closing.

Assessment

  • Teacher evaluation score sheet and persuasive writing self-assessment checklist for students.
  • Make a copy of the checklist
