Lesson 14 - Should Women Serve


Subject: Language Arts - Grade Level: 5


Objective

Student will write a letter addressing members of congress persuading them to change Naval policy or keeping in place the World War II policy that prohibited women from serving in combat roles aboard ship, or even being on the ship. Those students that try to persuade members of congress to allow women to serve aboard ship must include rationales supporting their position and must try and persuade congress to their way of thinking.

Materials

  • Battleship oral history transcripts
  • Battleship Website

Activities/Procedures

Student will write a persuasive letter that expresses an opinion and convinces others to agree with that opinion. Persuasive letter must include introduction, body, and closing.

Assessment

  • Teacher evaluation score sheet and persuasive writing self-assessment checklist for students.
  • Make copy of checklist
