Activities/Procedures

  • Introduce the concept of different jobs aboard ship by displaying an Administrative Organization chart that shows the departments that the Battleship’s 7 different departments and gives the departments assignments.
  • Copy each department assignment (job) onto an index card. On the bottom of the card, identify which department the job is listed under. Have each student a card to research.
  • Have Students make oral presentations or reports on the jobs, including duties performed and training.
  • Divide students into groups according to their job or department category. Give each group an assignment that will require cooperation and interdependence. Example: The assignment could be to operate and maintain the Battleship at sea. Groups will have to choose leaders to meet with other groups to keep the groups coordinated. Groups need to keep written records of their ideas and decisions, list assignments on chart paper, and sketch plans to be displayed and shared.
  • Have each group present its work to the entire class.
  • Have students prepare oral or written responses on the following topics:
    • The importance of any job in completing tasks.
    • How decisions are made in completing a task.

This activity should be assigned after touring the Battleship North Carolina. Whatever job student selects, they should be engaged in research while touring ship to observe and find out as much as they can about the job and what it’s role was in the overall operation of the ship.
