Lesson 23 - Meeting the Challenges of Naval Hygiene
Subject: Language Arts - Grade Level: 5-8
Objective
Student will have an overview understanding of the relationship between naval architecture and Naval hygiene. Student will also be able to state the problems and challenges of maintaining adequate naval hygiene with the changes in the type, size, and construction of ships. Student needs to think about problem solving and how ship designers and engineers met challenges.
Materials
- Resource handout – taken from a manual of naval hygiene prepared by the medical department US Navy (1943)
- Excerpts taken from foreword and chapter #1, The Ship As A Living Space
(pg. 1-3)
Activities/Procedures
Student will read chapter #1 handout (The Ship as A Living Space).
After reading handout, student will produce a written informational report describing the relationship between naval architecture and naval hygiene. In the report, the student must indicate the consequences of problems that were incurred during the transitional stages from oars to sails to steam driven ships. The report must also address the important changes that occurred as a result of material construction changes (wooden construction to iron and steel).
Finally, after having toured the Battleship NC, the student must discuss in detail how the challenges of naval hygiene were met (ventilation, food preservation, fresh water supply, heat, waste removal, redistribution, etc.) aboard the battleship while it was at sea. This report should be written within the context of Problem Solving and how ship designers and engineers met these challenges.
Assessment
Teacher evaluation of informational reports utilizing writing to inform checklist. Student can use self-assessment checklist. (Optional) – Student can present oral presentation to the class and discuss their personal observations aboard the Battleship NC in relation to how adequate naval hygiene was maintained.
