Lesson 8 - Military Time Reference

Subject: Math - Grade Level: 3, 4, 5

Objective

Students will understand and learn the relationship between military and civilian time using analog clock.

Materials

  • Handout entitled, Navy Time and Ship's Bell taken from The Bluejackets' Manual (1944).

Activities/Procedures

Students are assigned to read the handout on Navy time. After reading the handout, students can practice reading model clocks (analog) provided by the teacher using military time.

Optional: Teacher can provide analog clock worksheets displaying civilian time. Students are required to convert civilian time into military time and indicate the correct time on their worksheets.

Assessment

Teacher assesses the time worksheets given to students.

Note: The oral history transcripts contained in the Battleship North Carolina information packet constantly refer to the time events that occurred aboard ship in military (Navy) time. Therefore, it is important for students to be able to understand references made to military time.
