Lesson 9 - Percents to Graphs
Subject: Mathematics - Grade Level: 4- 6
Objective
Students will use data from Administrative Organization of the Battleship North Carolina to calculate the percentages of men that comprised each of the 7 departments of the battleship as a whole. They will then construct a circle graph/ pie chart that displays the percentages of each department as it relates to the total operation of the ship.
Materials
- Administrative Organization Profile Sheet of the Battleship North Carolina that lists the Administration and the 7 different departments.
- Compass
- Calculator
- Paper

Activities/Procedures
Students will take the number of men represented in each department of the ship and calculate percentages represented as the whole group.
This concept reviews finding percents by dividing the number of men in each department by the total number of men onboard the ship.
Students will then display these percentages of different department representation onto a circle graph/pie chart.
Technology integration-design circle graph/pie chart on computer or set up a spreadsheet using the department’s breakdown.
Assessment
Teacher evaluation of computation problems and visual evaluation of circle graph/pie chart, or spreadsheet.
