Lesson 10 - How Many Brownies for the Crew? Ratio and Proportions


Subject: Mathematics - Grade Levels: 4-6


Objective

Student will determine how many total pounds and ounces of mix it will take to make enough Pecan Brownies for the entire crew (2,126) aboard the Battleship North Carolina. They will determine the total cost for the recipe.

Materials

  • Recipe for Pecan Brownies (pdf file)
  • You can adapt the same lesson plan for the corn muffins recipe.

Activities/Procedures

Given: That batch should make about 72 brownies cut 4 ¼ by 1 ½, student must calculate how many total pounds and ounces of mix will be required to make enough brownies to feed all crew members aboard the ship one brownie. The student must calculate the total cost of producing the brownies for the crew.

Assessment

Teacher evaluates student answer sheet to determine if student use correct proportions and measurements.

Students must be able to orally explain how thy got their answers.
