Lesson Plans
Lesson 11 - "We'll need 4,800 hot dogs for lunch"
A Comparison/ Mathematics/Spreadsheet Activity
Subject: Mathematics - Grade Levels: 7
The cooks and bakers of the NORTH CAROLINA provided three hot meals each day to approximately 2,000 men. The entire crew could complete a meal in about 30 minutes. The students will use their math and technology skills to experience the preparation involved for planning such meals.
Goals/Objectives
(Grade 7 - Comp. Tech, Goal 2 and 3)
(Grade 7 - Mathematics, Goal 1)
The learner will demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of computer and other technologies-select appropriate spreadsheets functions to solve problems.
The learner will use a variety of technologies to access, analyze, interpret, synthesize, apply, and communicate information.
The learner will understand and compute with real numbers- model addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers; record- estimate and solve problems using ratio, proportion and percent including discounts, taxes, commissions, and simple interest.
The students will use the recipes to shop online to "cook" for the crew, their classmates, school and family. The students will input data into a spreadsheet.

Resources
Pre-Activities
The students will need to know how to shop online, and design a spreadsheet to use for cooking for the Ship, their classmates, school and family.
There are three recipes attached: one for apple pie filling, corn muffins and pecan brownies from the book Covo Tested Formulas (the cover of which is included).
The recipes provide opportunities for fun and practical ways of using multiplication, division and spreadsheet design.
Using the recipes and shopping for the items online, the children can determine how much it would cost to serve the following:
1. The 2,000 enlisted men aboard the Battleship.
2. The Children in their school
3. The Children in their classroom
4. Their family
Assessment
Completed spreadsheet for shopping online from the grocery store of their choice. Students can use calculators to double check their spreadsheet computations. Make srue the students figure 2% tax for food items.
Supplemental Resources/Information for Teachers
The recipe for the brownies makes approximately 5 dozen per pan.
The recipe for the corn muffins makes approximately 100 muffins.
These recipes were used in World War II by the crew, some of the items
will need to be rounded or guessed at since ther are not sold in some
of the quantities listed.
