How Does the Battleship Float?


Subject: Physics - Grade Levels: 11-12


Objectives

Student will have and understanding of why a ship as large and heavy as the Battleship North Carolina will float and not sink by applying Archimedes’ Principle.

Materials

  • Buoyancy of liquids handout
  • Calculator
  • Ruler

Activities/Procedure

Student will read handout Chpt. #9 entitled, How is the Buoyancy of Liquids Measured and Used? This section is obtained form the War Dept Education Manual.

Conduct experiments #1, #2 to see application of principles.

Answer questions
