Mapping Historical Data I


Subject: Social Studies - Grade Levels: 4-12


Objective

Student will identify and track important locations of islands within the Pacific Theater of operations and events participated in by the USS North Carolina.

Materials

  • Pacific Theater Map of World War II
  • Battleship Website
  • World Map (covered with a washable material for re-use)
  • World Atlas
  • Dry erase markers
  • Rulers

Activities/Procedures

Student will color code a map using dry erase markers to depict different campaigns and events participated in by the USS North Carolina. Students will then find the Pacific Theater of WWII using a large world map or atlas. The students will also explain "why" these islands were important to the Japanese and Americans from a strategic point of view.

Assessment

The teacher's evaluation of student’s map and observation of student’s ability to find important areas of Pacific Theater battles and needed areas.
