A Time For Change in Crisis

Subject: Art/Social Studies - Grade Level: 4-11

Objective

Students will choose a company or industry that existed during WWII and design a poster and slogan which displays the transition from civilian consumer goods to wartime production. Conversion Examples: Assembly lines of Chrysler, Ford, and GM--produced M3 tanks, B-25 bombers, and plane engines. Bedspread manufacturers--produced mosquito netting. Soft drink maker--loaded shell casings with explosive chemicals. Students will create a "catchy" slogan that informs the public consumer about what their company is contributing or doing to support the war effort.

Materials

  • WWII Resource
  • Poster Board
  • Colored Pencils
  • Markers
  • History books

Activities/Procedures

Students will research different companies that made the conversion of producing consumer goods to that of producing war goods and materials. After conducting research on the company of their choice, students will design their own poster and create their war slogan that tells the public what they are doing to support the war effort.
